The Briefing

16 September 2026

ESPHome 2026.9.0 ships: Noise-encrypted OTA updates and parallelized PlatformIO installs cut package-phase CI time. Elsewhere, Hue’s Play gradient strip pro is still Coming soon a day after the calendar date, and IKEA’s Matter-over-Thread cabinet driver stays on European shelves.

01 · ESPHome

ESPHome 2026.9.0 — faster builds and encrypted updates

What happened: ESPHome tagged stable 2026.9.0 today (GitHub release ~2026-09-16T08:47:11Z; official blog same day). Headline theme: faster builds and encrypted updates. OTA now supports Noise (ChaCha20-Poly1305) encryption, using the same key as API encryption to Home Assistant. PlatformIO install/download is parallelized; package-phase CI benchmark drops from roughly 36% to ~25% of build time. An ESP8266 native toolchain foundation lands dormant (user-facing in 2026.10.0). Six new components: ds1603l, d01, sfa40, mk2pvrouter, snapshot, noise. Zigbee-sourced time platform on ESP32.

Upgrade notes: modbus_controller option renames — custom_commandcustom_pdu; register_count / force_new_rangereuse_previous_range. ESP32 custom eFuse MAC is now applied to Ethernet, Bluetooth, and 802.15.4 — devices with a custom MAC may need DHCP / BLE / Thread re-commission.

Why it matters: Encrypted OTA closes a gap for fleets that already encrypt the API; the PlatformIO parallelization is the build-time win most CI users will feel first.

What happened: Signify’s 3 Sep IFA press calendared the Play gradient strip light / strip light pro portfolio from 15 September. One day later, primary Hue storefronts have not flipped: the US pro 100" page ($229.99) and the UK pro 65" page (£139.99) both still show Coming soon. Pro keeps OmniGlow wall-wash and cut-to-fit mounting; Matter for Hue lighting remains via Bridge / third-party hub as before.

Why it matters: Calendar day passed; cart day is still not universal. Rolling ship, not an overnight every-SKU drop.

What happened: IKEA’s DUBBELKISEL 30 W smart LED driver (article 50609444) remains live on European product pages as a Matter-compatible replacement path for the older Zigbee TRÅDFRI wireless driver. Official copy: Matter over Thread, needs a Thread Border Router (DIRIGERA cited as an example), up to 8 lighting units under 30 W total, up to 10 drivers per installation. Germany still lists ~€22. US/UK timing still unannounced.
