The Briefing

17 September 2026

Aqara’s Spatial Multi-Sensor FP400 is shipping worldwide with dual Zigbee and Matter-over-Thread paths into Home Assistant and other Matter controllers. Separately, Google opened early access to a Home MCP server so MCP-capable agents can drive Nest and Works-with-Google-Home devices — Premium Advanced, U.S., for now. The open-source stack versions are quiet overnight.

Aqara FP400 ships — mmWave presence with Zigbee and Matter over Thread

What happened: Aqara’s 16 Sep availability announcement put the Spatial Multi-Sensor FP400 (models PS-S05E / PS-S05D) on sale worldwide via aqara.com, authorized retail, and Amazon in multiple markets. It is a 60 GHz mmWave spatial sensor: up to 10 people tracked, coverage up to 10 × 8 m, 120° FOV, ambient light sensing, USB-C 5V/1A power, IPX5. Dual radio: Zigbee (Aqara hub required to bridge into third-party Matter) and Matter over Thread (third-party Thread Border Router; Aqara says the device can be configured in Aqara Home without an Aqara hub on an existing Thread network).

Matter caveat: Aqara’s own footnotes matter for HA readers. On Thread into third-party platforms, the press note says the FP400 exposes one overall presence sensor and one illuminance sensor. Product copy about up to eight custom zones is tied to Aqara Home / hub setup paths — do not assume full zone export on a bare Matter join. Home Assistant is on Aqara’s Matter platform list.

Why it matters: Camera-free multi-person presence with a Thread path that can skip the Aqara hub is the local-stack story; verify zone exposure on your controller before you buy for zone automations.

02 · Platforms / Google Home

Google Home MCP — early access for AI agents on Nest and Matter gear

What happened: On 16 Sep, Google opened early access to a Home MCP (Model Context Protocol) server for the Google Home ecosystem. MCP-capable agents (TechCrunch names Claude, Hermes, OpenClaw, ChatGPT, Google Antigravity) can inspect structure, monitor state, run actions, and query event history after the user stands up a Google Cloud project, enables the Home API, and completes OAuth. Developer docs list tools such as list_homes, list_home_resources, list_home_states, run_home_actions, and list_home_history. Access is rolling to Google Home Premium Advanced subscribers in the U.S. Docs warn about rate limits, blocked sensitive actions (e.g. unlocking doors), and household consent.

Why it matters: Cloud-side agent control of Nest / Works-with-Google-Home (including Matter bulbs) — not a Home Assistant release, but it sets expectations for how AI clients will talk to homes. Local-first stacks still need their own agent boundaries.

03 · ESPHome

ESPHome 2026.9.0 — day after stable

What happened: Yesterday’s stable 2026.9.0 remains the current tag: Noise (ChaCha20-Poly1305) encrypted OTA, parallelized PlatformIO installs, six new components, modbus_controller renames, and the custom eFuse MAC applied across Ethernet / BLE / 802.15.4. No newer patch overnight.

Why it matters: Upgrade checklist from the 16 Sep brief still applies; watch custom-MAC Thread/Zigbee nodes for re-commission.

IKEA DUBBELKISEL — Matter-over-Thread cabinet driver still listing in Europe

What happened: No overnight change to the European listing for DUBBELKISEL (article 50609444): Matter over Thread, Thread Border Router required, ~€22 DE. US/UK timing still unannounced. Community write-ups continue to flag IPv6 / Border Router setup friction for Matter-over-Thread IKEA gear — treat as operational noise, not a new SKU.
