The Briefing
15 October 2026
ESPHome maintainers have logged two breaking changes in the dev blog that land with 2026.10.0 — the stable that still isn't out (beta 4 is). Supervisor 2026.10.2 shipped yesterday but stable.json still pins 2026.09.3. Core stays 2026.10.1; HAOS 18.3, Z2M 2.14.2, Z-Wave JS UI 11.24.3 unchanged.

Two breaking changes banked for ESPHome 2026.10.0 — external components will need edits
What happened: The ESPHome developer blog logged two API breaks aimed at 2026.10.0 and later. First (5 Oct): select options and light effects move to build-time flash tables — getters return a ConstVector view instead of FixedVector, and code that names the old type or calls capacity()/full() needs a small change. Second (14 Oct, J. Nick Koston): remote_base protocol methods are no longer virtual and receiver lists are sized from codegen. On the release side, the stable is still 2026.9.0 (16 Sep); the newest tag is beta 2026.10.0b4 (13 Oct).
Why it matters: Anyone running custom or third-party external_components — remote remotes, custom selects, custom light effects — should read both notes before the .0 drops. Production ESPHome devices stay on 2026.9.0 until then, which the beta cadence (four betas in seven days) suggests is close.
Supervisor 2026.10.2 shipped yesterday — stable pin still 2026.09.3
What happened: Supervisor 2026.10.2 was tagged 14 Oct (08:13 UTC, we carried it yesterday) and 2026.10.1 on 8 Oct. But version.home-assistant.io/stable.json still advertises supervisor 2026.09.3 this morning — the pin has not moved to the 2026.10 line. The 2026.10.2 note carries a breaking change: ingress sessions must enforce the panel_admin role.
Why it matters: New installs and updates from the stable channel won't see 2026.10.2 until the pin moves. If your add-ons depend on ingress auth behavior, watch for the 2026.10.x cut landing in the stable channel rather than acting on the GitHub tag alone.
What happened: No 2026.10.2 overnight. The latest stable tag remains 2026.10.1 (10 Oct), and stable.json keeps advertising it as the default for capable boards. Nothing newer on the releases list.
Hue firmware 1.164.2: Zigbee and Matter at once, bridgeless
What happened: Philips Hue released lamp firmware 1.164.2 (5 Oct) for lights on hardware platform 100b-129 — the 2026 lineup plus the Thread-radioed E27 bulbs and GU10 spots from fall 2025. Release notes list Matter 1.4.1 support, Apple adaptive lighting over Matter, and "Zigbee and Matter concurrency in bridgeless mode": a bulb running native Matter can strengthen a Thread mesh without ever joining a Hue Bridge.
Why it matters: That's mains-powered Thread repeaters in the mesh regardless of which ecosystem commissioned the bulb — a meaningful shift for houses running HA as the Matter controller alongside a Hue Bridge. Hueblog reports a bulb first set up over Thread can later join a Bridge without re-pairing.
Play Gradient Lightstrip Pro — report of US stock in third-party retail
Philips Hue Play gradient strip light pro — source Signify press kit
What happened: r/Hue reports the pro 65" has reached US stores — Amazon listings at $179.99 from roughly a week ago — while Hue's own US product page has been the slow one to flip. We could not independently verify the Hue US page going live this morning, so treat the US stock picture as third-party confirmed only; the UK page has been in stock at £139.99 since late September.
Reminder: Home Assistant Cloud becomes "Home Assistant Link" on 2 December
What happened: Nabu Casa confirmed the rename lands in the 2026.12 release on 2 December 2026. Same subscription, no migration, no price change billed — remote access, voice integration, speech-to-text and cloud backups continue under the new name. The company frames it as disambiguation: the service links a fully local setup to optional online extras rather than storing your home in anyone's cloud.
Why it matters: Purely cosmetic — but if your automations, docs or dashboards reference "Nabu Casa / Home Assistant Cloud" by name, 2026.12 is when strings start changing.
What happened: No regulatory decision on Schneider's €70/share tender for Shelly Group since the board backed it on Tuesday (carried in yesterday's brief). Gen4 ThreadLink firmware likewise unchanged — still the "approximately three months" IFA framing, which points at roughly December, delivered as an opt-in per-device update.
IKEA TIMMERFLOTTE — still watching the prod-firmware fallout
What happened: No new development since Tuesday's reporting that production firmware 61 left devices dropped offline (community-sourced, not vendor-confirmed). No change in the IKEA Matter test line for the TIMMERFLOTTE line this morning.
