The Briefing

8 September 2026

Weekday brief as IFA Berlin closes. Local AI Matter hubs lead; Open Home Foundation, Shelly, Heiman, Core 2026.9.1, and the radio stack fill the rail.

Local AI hubs collide as IFA closes: Anker MindBase vs Ugreen HomeAgent

IFA Berlin wraps today (Sep 4–8). Two vendors that made their names on chargers and NAS both showed up pitching the same product shape: a Matter controller that also runs on-device AI and keeps camera footage in the house, without a monthly storage plan.

Anker MindBase (unveiled Sep 3) is a Matter 1.5 controller with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Thread, and Zigbee, a 26-TOPS on-device AI card (TrueSmart Agent), and expandable storage up to 48TB. Anker says it will talk to Apple HomeKit Secure Video, Alexa, Google Home, and Home Assistant, and plans later “agents” for energy and cleaning after security. The first kit pairs MindBase with the TrackLight Cam S1; also at IFA: Video Doorbell S4 at $299.99 (late September) and Window Camera E10 at $69.99 (later this year). MindBase itself still has no price or ship date.

Ugreen HomeAgent got a Verge hands-on (Sep 4). Three hubs: HA100, HA100 Pro, and MasterAgent MA100 on Nvidia Jetson Thor T5000 (up to 2,070 TFLOPS). Kickstarter early-bird (October): about $899 / $2,999 / $9,999, with retail roughly double after. Voice assistant is Uliya. Matter controller support is real in the demo (Nanoleaf + blinds), but phase one is lights, switches, sensors, and curtains, and Ugreen wants you on its approved list (Aqara, ThirdReality, SwitchBot, Eve named so far). Push notifications and remote camera viewing still need the internet; cloud Uliya is optional.

Same week, same hall, two “brain of the home” boxes. Local-first pitch is the story; price and Matter breadth decide whether either is more than a booth.

02 · Open Home

Open Home Foundation — last day at IFA

What happened
OHF booth Hall 1.2, stand 1.2-153, with Apollo Automation and Nabu Casa. Private/trade visitors today until 18:00. The community meetup was Sunday Sep 6 at Enjoy Rooftop.
Why it matters
First OHF exhibitor turn at IFA closes today — the local-stack foundation sharing a hall with commercial “brain of the home” hubs.

03 · Matter & Thread

Shelly Wall Display firmware 2.8.0 — Matter dual-role

Shelly Wall Display XL
Shelly Wall Display XL — source Shelly media kit
What happened
Free OTA turns X1i, X2i, XL, U1, S1, S2, and XT into dual-role Matter panels: commission third-party Matter lights/covers/thermostats/fans/plugs/sensors with no bridge, and expose the panel’s own relays, dimmer, and thermostat to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or Home Assistant. First-gen / X2 get shared Matter devices only. Thread still needs a separate border router. Premium cloud history for Matter devices follows later in September.
Why it matters
A wall panel that is both Matter controller and Matter device without a separate bridge — rare dual-role hardware on a free firmware path.

Heiman HS2HT — Matter 1.6 NFC commissioning

Heiman HS2HT Matter temperature humidity sensor
Heiman HS2HT — source Matter Alpha
What happened
IP65 outdoor temp/humidity sensor at IFA labeled for Matter 1.6 NFC pairing — early hardware of NFC as commissioning transport (not just payload storage). Also shown: WS6GW Matter Bridge for Zigbee/Sub-GHz into Matter ecosystems, SC3 smoke/CO variants, HS2VTD 4-in-1 contact sensor, HS1ZT Zigbee/Thread dongle. Pricing and retail TBA.
Why it matters
NFC commissioning on a shipping-shaped Matter 1.6 sensor is a concrete floor demo, not just a CSA slide.

05 · Home Assistant

Home Assistant Core 2026.9.1 (Sep 5)

What happened
Patch after 2026.9.0 (“There’s room on this bus,” Sep 2). Headline features still stand: Modbus UI device integrations, Matter network map in the main UI, Security dashboard active alerts/favorites, Activity “why it changed,” Cloud STT Labs. .1 is the stability/hotfix train community threads pointed people at after reboot/load pain on .0.
Why it matters
The monthly story (Modbus UI + Matter map) is unchanged; operators should be on the .1 patch train.

06 · ESPHome

ESPHome 2026.9.0b2 (Sep 7)

What happened
Second beta: template climate platform, OTA encryption offer using the API key, Noise/libsodium bumps, ESP-NOW-over-hosted for ESP32-P4, Device Builder bumps through 1.14.4. Stable remains 2026.8.x until the monthly cut.
Why it matters
Beta channel only — useful for early adopters, not a stable cut yet.

07 · Zigbee

Zigbee2MQTT 2.14.1

What happened
Follow-up to 2.14.0: cover/expose hotfixes, more device support (Lincukoo, Aqara blinds, Siemens thermostats, Nova Digital, etc.). Umbrel and Docker tags show 2.14.1 live.
Why it matters
Patch after a large 2.14.0 device batch — cover/expose fixes matter for real installs.

Zigbee2MQTT releases

08 · Z-Wave

Z-Wave JS UI 11.23.0

What happened
Speed column in the control panel, zwave-js 15.28.0, MQTT Window Covering → HA cover discovery, debug session metadata. No 11.24 yet as of this morning.
Why it matters
Driver bump plus cover discovery for MQTT/HA paths — quiet but useful ops release.

zwave-js-ui 11.23.0

09 · Voice / cloud

Google Assistant mobile sunset underway

What happened
Google started removing classic Assistant on Android / Wear OS / projected Android Auto from Sep 4; Gemini is the phone path. Nest speakers keep Assistant for now. HA community reports mixed: devices exposed via google_assistant often still controllable from Gemini; voice→script routines that depended on Assistant intent matching are breaking.
Why it matters
Another cloud-assistant lock-in moment — local voice / HA’s own assistant stack gets another nudge.

10 · Matter & Thread / Zigbee

CSA Suzi product certification open

What happened
Zigbee sub-GHz (Suzi) certification program is open for members — long-range / better penetration sibling to 2.4 GHz Zigbee 4.0, not a Matter replacement. Bridges still the path into Matter ecosystems.
Why it matters
The “vendors can ship branded interoperable hardware” gate for sub-GHz Zigbee, not a consumer end-product day.
